If you don’t see the question you have on this list, please contact us at info@crystalballroom.ca and we will be happy to help you out.
Do I need a partner?
No, you do not need a partner to start group lessons! Whether you’re a lead or follow, we will teach you the steps and there will be chances to dance with a partner in class. It’s common to start learning ballroom dancing as a solo dancer.
Do I have to have prior experience to start group lessons?
Not at all. For those just starting to learn dance, you’ll be in good hands in our Beginner classes.
I have some prior dance experience. Which level of lessons should I take?
We love welcoming intermediate to advance dancers to our program. You will find yourself fitting right in as we teach the curriculum of DanceSport that is the same world-wide.
The best thing is to contact us to discuss your prior dance experience and your current dance goals. We will be able to find you a class that best suits your needs.
If you have experience in other dances but not Ballroom or Latin dancing, we do recommend you try the Beginners class. As we teach the full-slate of dances in our genre, there will be lots to keep you engaged and moving!
How often should I be taking group lessons?
Typically, our students take group lessons once a week on an on-going basis.
Some students may opt to take multiple group lessons per week and we have packages to support students who want to come in more frequently. We will help you make a choice that suits your schedule and goals.
When do I move on to the next level of classes?
As our students all learn at different paces, our group classes are designed so that you can go at the speed that works best for you. Typically, our students advance to the next level after 4-6 months of instructions for beginners, 6-9 months for intermediate or advance dancers.
During that time, you’ll be learning the full-slate of dances and their accompanying coreography, with new technique and steps at each level! Many of our students find they are plenty engaged in their group lessons.
Our class instructors can help you identify when it is a great time to advance or you can contact us at info@crystalballroom.ca, and we’d love to help you.
Lastly, students can always drop into any classes by using a credit from their Monthly Pass or Flex Pass to try the more advance class to see if it’s suitable for them.
When can I start?
Anytime! Our classes are arranged to accept new students year round, making it easy and convenient to start your group lessons to get you dancing.
If you want to time your start so that we are starting a new dance that week, refer to our schedule to know which dance we are teaching on a specific date. In our Beginners classes, we typically teach a new dance every week or every other week, while the more advance classes typically rotate dances every 2-3 weeks.
To start, contact us by phone or email, or drop into the studio, and let us know which class you wish to join!
What should I wear to my lesson?
For your first few lessons, please feel free to wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Shoes should be suitable for indoor use meaning they are clean with unmarking soles. Please observe the studio etiquette in the About Us page which gives suggestion on attire suitable for ballroom dancing.
After your first few lessons, we recommend acquiring specialty ballroom and/or latin shoes. Dance shoes help support your body and make it easier and safer to move across the floor. Your instructor will be able to offer guidance on where to acquire dance shoes and what to look for in your dance gear. Should you want further recommendations, do not hesitate to ask us in person or email us at info@crystalballroom.ca.
